Gervasoni questioned for four hours: the referee case returns to the spotlight
Andrea Gervasoni, former deputy director of VAR officiating and long-serving refereeing official, spent four hours with PM Maurizio Asione during an interrogation that is making waves in Italian football. Upon leaving, the former official stated he had “made himself available to the magistrate”, claiming to have answered all questions posed, while stopping short of making any particularly significant public declarations.
What emerged from the interrogation
According to Gervasoni himself, the interrogation focused primarily on the Salernitana vs Modena match, leaving other threads of the investigation in the background. Notably, he stated that no questions were raised regarding referees allegedly favoured by Inter, a topic that has stirred considerable debate in recent weeks.
When asked by a journalist whether there was an internal war among referees, his answer was blunt: “I won’t respond to those things.” Gervasoni chose silence on the most sensitive issues, citing respect for the ongoing judicial process.
The sports fraud hypothesis
At the core of the investigation lies a hypothesis of sports fraud aimed at favouring certain referees, an accusation that, if confirmed, could have significant consequences for the entire Serie A refereeing system. Gervasoni declined to comment on this specific allegation, reaffirming his trust in the judicial process. Despite producing no explosive declarations, the interrogation was described as lengthy and thorough.
An investigation involving all of Italian football
The case, which directly touches on the dynamics of Italian refereeing, is being closely followed by the Milanese environment. Transparency and fairness in referee appointments are issues close to the heart of all fan bases, and Milan supporters are no exception. The Rossoneri faithful hope the investigation will shed full light on any irregularities, in defence of the integrity of the championship.
