Glasner-Milan, almost there: the Austrian is the number one favourite for the Rossoneri bench
The situation surrounding AC Milan’s managerial position is becoming increasingly clear. In recent hours, new contacts have emerged between the Rossoneri and Oliver Glasner, a 51-year-old Austrian coach who, according to the latest available information, has given his agreement to Milan’s proposal. A very strong signal that concretely brings the manager closer to taking charge of the Diavolo.
Who is Oliver Glasner: a respectable European CV
Glasner is not just any name. The coach born in Wels in 1974 built his international reputation with two major European successes: winning the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2021-22 season, beating Rangers in the final, and triumphing in the Conference League with Crystal Palace in the 2023-24 season. Two European trophies that demonstrate an uncommon ability to handle pressure and major stages.
A profile that Milan has chosen with clear awareness, seeking a coach capable of restoring credibility and European ambition to the Rossoneri project.
Contacts with Cardinale, Ibrahimović and Calvelli
Talks between Glasner and Milan took place with the trio currently at the top of the club: Gerry Cardinale, owner of RedBird Capital, Zlatan Ibrahimović in his advisory role, and Calvelli. Following the recent corporate reorganisation that saw the departures of Tare, Allegri, Furlani and Moncada, these are the main decision-makers at the club. In these summits, Glasner reportedly showed openness and willingness to embark on this adventure, setting aside other proposals he had received.
The issues to resolve: the back three and the Rangnick question
There are, however, elements that require careful consideration. Glasner is a coach who favours a back three, a formation that has not always brought out the best in the Rossoneri in recent seasons. Adapting his playing system to the characteristics of the squad will be one of the new coach’s main challenges, as he will need to find the right balance between his own tactical identity and Milan’s needs.
Then there is the Rangnick question: German coach Ralf Rangnick, currently Austria’s national team manager, has long been linked with the role of Rossoneri sporting director. At the moment, however, he has yet to provide a definitive answer, and Milan must still decide what to do on that front. The Glasner operation could therefore proceed completely independently from that involving the former RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg coach, marking a shift from initial plans.

The Allegri knot: the settlement is not yet closed
Before looking fully ahead, there is still an open issue linked to the past: Massimiliano Allegri, sacked by Milan, has not yet received the full financial settlement due to him for the termination of his contract. An administrative formality that is also keeping other clubs on hold, including Napoli, waiting for the Livorno-born coach to formally free himself from all ties with the Rossoneri.
Milan starts again: confidence in the project
Despite the current difficulties — organisational, technical and corporate — Milan remains one of the most iconic clubs in world football. Glasner knows this well, and it is no coincidence that he has chosen the Rossoneri over other offers. History speaks clearly: the Diavolo has always found the strength to rise again in difficult moments, and this new era could represent the beginning of an exciting chapter.
