Porto move for Giménez: interest is real, but Milan won’t lower their demands

The situation surrounding Santiago Giménez is generating growing attention at Casa Milan. The Mexican striker, signed by the Rossoneri in January 2025 for around €30 million from Feyenoord, has attracted the interest of Porto. Contacts have been opened between the player’s entourage and the Portuguese club, at the specific request of head coach Francesco Farioli, who wants the centre-forward to join as early as the upcoming summer window.

Farioli wants him, but the financial picture remains unclear

Farioli is no stranger to Italian football: the coach built up significant experience in Serie A before moving to Portugal, and his admiration for Giménez has been known for some time. However, Porto’s interest is still at an exploratory stage — contacts have been made, but a formal negotiation has yet to begin, as already highlighted in earlier reports.

On the financial side, everything remains to be defined. Milan paid a significant fee to bring Giménez to San Siro and has no intention of letting him leave at a knockdown price. The player’s market value has dipped somewhat since his arrival, however: the Mexican has gone through a difficult spell in front of goal, failing to score consistently in Serie A across his first season and a half in Italian football.

Giménez and the World Cup: Mexico first, transfers later

Adding another layer to the picture — in a positive sporting sense — is the World Cup. Giménez is fully committed to the Mexican national team, who impressed in the group stage by topping their group. Through his agent, the striker has made clear that he wants to remain completely focused on the competition, without being distracted by transfer speculation.

It is a mature and professional stance, reflecting the player’s character. As his representative has already made clear, any decision about his future will be deferred until after the tournament ends. In the meantime, Porto continues to work through agents and intermediaries, trying to get a head start on any potential operation.

Milan set their price: at least €20m to open talks

Despite an underwhelming goalscoring season, Milan view Giménez as an important asset and are not prepared to sell him below a certain threshold. The club’s valuation sits at around €20–25 million as a minimum to even begin discussions — a clear indicator that Porto will need to come to the table with a serious offer if they truly intend to pursue the move.

It is worth remembering that, despite his domestic struggles, Giménez remains a technically accomplished striker: strong, with a natural instinct for goal and excellent hold-up play. The World Cup could boost his stock considerably, particularly if Mexico advances deep into the knockout rounds with his contribution.

The situation continues to evolve. Milan, for their part, are not a selling club and will carefully assess any proposal that lands on the table at Via Aldo Rossi. The summer promises to be long and full of twists on the Rossoneri transfer front.
