Verona-Milan: Rossoneri reclaim three points

To secure their spot in the Champions League, Milan needed to take advantage of slip-ups by Napoli, Como, Roma and Atalanta, winning in Verona with no ifs or buts. To do so, they returned to the 3-5-2 formation, hoping to rediscover at least a glimpse of positivity after the disastrous home defeat against Udinese.

First Half: Rabiot breaks the deadlock

The opening half was largely devoid of real chances. It was the Rossoneri who tried to dictate the play, attempting to create danger through through balls and set pieces, though none of it came to anything. The hosts sat back and rarely managed to counter-attack effectively. The first real shot on target came after the half-hour mark from Rabiot, with Montipò holding on. That chance proved to be the prelude to the goal, which came 10 minutes later, with the same Frenchman slipping between two Verona defenders to finish off a Leao through ball. Verona had just enough time before the break to force Maignan into his first save.

Second Half: Milan manage the game with ease

In the second half, Milan did little to double their lead. As the minutes passed, in the closing stages of the match, Verona began to show a bit more initiative, carving out a couple of chances. However, the visitors’ defence remained largely compact, keeping danger to a minimum and comfortably keeping possession in midfield for long spells. Intensity increased in the final 10 minutes, but again, the match drifted towards its conclusion without any notable chances, apart from two consecutive shots from Ricci and Saelemaekers.

Conclusion

And so it ended, with Milan reclaiming 3 points against an opponent who, all things considered, never really posed a genuine threat.
