For better or worse, last night Milan showed traits that have already emerged at the start of this season. First, an attempt at proactive football filled with pressing, through balls and chances. Then a phase of virtual nothingness that lasted throughout the final 30 minutes. It felt like an extreme version of the opening league match against Torino.

A Balance Yet to Be Found

Milan seem to only know how to operate at extremes: either dominant, attractive football or a complete blackout. In football, a team should always strive to maintain its own balance. But in this situation, we are truly on the edge. You cannot afford to switch off and risk being pegged back so frequently. Especially because, as seen against Juventus and Sassuolo, the risk of dropping points from winning positions is very real.

The Positives

Beyond this aspect, which clearly needs improving, there are also positive signs. First and foremost, the sublime form of players who are proving increasingly important. Rabiot combines quality in his play, key recoveries and decisive goals. Gila and Pavlovic are often a reliable presence in defence, even during the team’s most difficult moments in matches.

Conclusions

Overall, one can consider themselves satisfied with what has been seen so far this season, provided that the major issues that have emerged are not underestimated. Because if Milan want to aim for something important, they cannot fall asleep in the middle of matches.
