The investigation into the refereeing system: what we know today
Italian football continues to grapple with an investigation that is growing increasingly complex. In recent hours, two important press releases from ANSA have shed new light on the Milan-based investigation into the refereeing system, adding significant details to a picture that is still developing.
According to the news agency, there are currently five named suspects whose identities are known. However, the total number of individuals registered in the investigation is higher: some allegations of sporting fraud involve multiple people acting in concert, which means additional names could emerge in the coming days.
Tension within the Prosecutor’s office
The second ANSA release may be even more significant from an institutional standpoint. According to sources, there is a strong internal tension within the Prosecutor’s office, relating to how PM Ascione is handling the investigation compared to senior management. No formal statement has been issued on the matter, but the silence itself speaks volumes: since 25 April, when summons notifications were served to Gianluca Rocchi and Gervasoni, no official communication has been released.
It should be recalled that Rocchi, the referee designator for Serie A and Serie B, and Gervasoni both self-suspended immediately upon receiving their notifications — a move that had a profound impact on the entire Italian refereeing system. The AGI (Agenzia Giornalistica Italia) is also closely following the situation.
No clubs involved, investigation covers previous seasons only
Two key clarifications emerge from the ANSA reports and deserve to be highlighted clearly. First: among those under investigation, no club-registered individuals are involved, from either Serie A or Serie B. The probe is focused exclusively on the refereeing world. Second: no match from the current season (2025-26) is under investigation — the inquiry is limited to the two previous seasons.
These are important details that help define the scope of the investigation and, as far as the current campaign is concerned, rule out scenarios of on-field irregularities. Italian football awaits further developments, hoping that the judiciary will bring clarity swiftly and that the integrity of the system will be restored with full transparency.
