Giroud opens up: Maldini, Leao and a rossonero heart
Olivier Giroud has spoken again about his time at Milan in a two-part interview released by Milan News. The former French striker, a key figure in the 2021-2022 Serie A title triumph, delivered emotion-filled words full of genuine attachment to the rossonero colours, confirming how deeply that chapter of his career left its mark.
“Working with Maldini was an honour”
One of the most touching moments of the interview concerned Paolo Maldini, an absolute legend of world football and the undisputed symbol of Milan. Giroud did not hesitate to express his full admiration: «I was very proud of him. Working with someone who means so much for Milan and Italian football was a real honour». Sincere words from a professional who knows how to recognise greatness.
On Maldini’s departure from the club in 2023, the Frenchman admitted feeling some disappointment, while acknowledging that Milan must continue to move forward. «Milan must go on anyway», he said. And in an almost wistful tone he added: «Maybe one day Paolo will come back» — a wish shared by thousands of rossonero supporters.
“Rafa, I love you”: a special message to Leao
There was also a heartfelt thought for Rafael Leão, the Portuguese winger and one of the most talented players in Serie A. Giroud described his former teammate as a player who needs constant support from the whole squad, and sent him a direct, moving message: «The whole team is helping him. If you hear me, Rafa, I want to tell you that I love you».
A gesture that says a lot about the dressing-room spirit built during the title-winning years: a tight-knit group capable of supporting each other through difficult moments. Giroud was precisely that reference point — the quiet leader who dragged his teammates toward the championship with goals and character.
Could Giroud return to Milan? “Why not…”
When asked about a possible return to Milanello, the striker — who has just turned 39 and is in the final stages of his playing career — did not close the door. «Why not? One day I could come back to Milan, but obviously not as a player. Maybe in a different role». A statement that opens up intriguing scenarios: Giroud in a management or coaching role would not be at all surprising, given his footballing intelligence and communication skills.
The bond between Olivier Giroud and Milan is clearly far more than a simple professional relationship. It is a footballing love story that, in the words of the man himself, does not seem destined to end definitively.
