Divock Origi says goodbye to football: official retirement at 31
Divock Origi has officially announced his retirement from professional football. The Belgian, who will turn 32 in April 2027, chose his personal social media channels to communicate the end of his playing career. A piece of news that, for AC Milan supporters, inevitably reopens one of the most controversial chapters in recent years at the club.
The (almost invisible) spell at Milan
Origi’s last professional experience was indeed with the AC Milan shirt. Having joined on a free transfer from Liverpool in the summer of 2022, the Belgian striker had raised positive expectations: coming from important seasons with the Reds, he seemed like he could be a quality addition to the Rossoneri’s attacking department. Things, unfortunately, turned out very differently.
In a Milan shirt, Origi made very few appearances, effectively being almost never available or used by the coach. The situation deteriorated to the point where the club sent him on loan to Nottingham Forest, without that solution producing any noteworthy footballing results either. Upon his return, separation seemed inevitable, and so it was: a contract termination with a settlement fee, with the player leaving Milanello without having left a real mark on the pitch.
A signing that never convinced
Origi’s arrival had been welcomed with some enthusiasm, but his adventure in a Rossoneri shirt remains in AC Milan’s history books as one of the most unproductive signings of the recent era. An operation that, on paper, had no transfer fee but proved costly on the salary front, without any on-pitch performance to justify the investment.
Football, however, can be unpredictable, and such stories happen even to the most structured clubs. Milan has learned from that experience, and the new Rossoneri management has all the necessary material to build a more reliable and motivated attacking department.
A farewell to football at 31
What stands out about Origi’s announcement is the relatively young age: 31 years old is an age at which many strikers are still in their prime. The Belgian’s choice to hang up his boots so early perhaps tells us more than any analysis could about the declining trajectory of a career that promised far more than it ultimately delivered, especially in its latter stages.
Before Milan, it must be said, Origi had experienced moments of true glory with Liverpool: decisive goals in the Champions League, including the one in the famous 2019 Madrid final against Tottenham. A player capable of sudden flashes of brilliance, but who never found the consistency needed to impose himself at the highest level over the long term.
A page that closes
With Origi’s retirement, a chapter that Rossoneri supporters remember with a mixture of bitterness and irony is definitively closed. Milan looks ahead, buoyed by a young squad and a management working to build a winning project. Origi’s story remains a useful reminder: talent without dedication is never enough, at any level.
