Milan win in Genoa in a match where they led for approximately 80 minutes. Despite the late scare, for the second consecutive game in the league, the Rossoneri take home 3 points.
⚽ First Half
In the opening minutes, both teams created their first chances. Both Osmajic and Gonzalo Ramos shot just wide from good positions. The Portuguese striker, from close range, also failed to convert a good cross from Gila. Overall, Amorim‘s side appeared the more active in both attack and pressing.
It was precisely from a high press recovery that Rabiot fed Cissé for the opening goal. A similar story for the 0-2: a high recovery by Cissé, the ball crossed and managed by Ramos before being served to Pulisic. Overall, Milan dominated possession. Genoa struggled to get forward, with Maignan barely called into action until the 40th minute, when he saved a long-range effort. Minutes later, he also claimed a close-range header from Ostigard.
😴 Second Half… and the late scare
The second half was uneventful from the start. Milan kept the ball moving without creating chances. Genoa tried to threaten with through balls but were consistently thwarted by the attentive Rossoneri defenders. The tempo remained mostly slow, mirroring the second half of the first period.
The first real chance came in the 73rd minute, with Maignan proving decisive against a close-range effort from Vitinha. It is worth noting that throughout the second half, none of Pulisic, Rabiot or Moreira managed to pose any real threat going forward.
However, Genoa began to push hard in the final stages. First El Shaarawy with a deflected shot that went just over, then Ostigard with a long-range attempt. And it was with another long-range strike that, with 3 minutes remaining, Ellertsson pulled one back to make it 1-2.
This sudden goal reignited the match, with the hosts trying to ride the momentum and keep pushing forward. Milan’s saving grace was that there was very little time left on the clock. Amorim‘s men managed a couple of key possessions and a free-kick from Baldanzi to secure the 3 points. And without that late scare, it would have been an even more comfortable evening.
