Højbjerg Back on Milan’s Shortlist: Di Marzio Reports the Interest

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg‘s name has resurfaced in AC Milan‘s transfer plans. The Danish midfielder currently at Marseille, 30 years old, was relaunched by respected journalist Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sport as a potential Rossoneri target. This is not the first time the Dane has been linked with Milan — previous windows saw his name come and go without a deal materialising. This time, however, the tactical context under new head coach Ruben Amorim could make the move more feasible.

Why Højbjerg Makes Sense in Amorim’s Milan

Amorim’s preferred system — a three-at-the-back structure with two defensive midfielders screening the defence alongside two wide midfielders — demands exactly the kind of profile the Danish international offers. At 185 cm, physically dominant and tactically disciplined, Højbjerg brings significant experience from stints at Bayern Munich, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Marseille, as well as a consistent presence in the Danish national team.

According to Transfermarkt, his market value stands at around €15 million. With his contract running until 2028, Marseille retain leverage, but at that valuation the deal remains financially achievable for Milan — a shrewd, cost-effective reinforcement.

Crowded Midfield: Someone Must Leave

The real challenge lies in managing an already packed midfield department. For the central defensive midfield role, Milan already have Samuele Ricci, Adrien Rabiot, Luka Modrić — whose renewal remains uncertain — plus profiles like Youssouf Fofana and Yunus Musah (the latter potentially available for transfer), not to mention wide options such as Tijjani Reijnders.

It is clear that should Milan close a deal for the Danish midfielder, at least one current squad member would need to move on. Outgoing business in midfield is therefore a decisive factor in unlocking this potential arrival. Højbjerg would bring reliability, physicality and international pedigree — exactly what Amorim needs to build a solid foundation in front of his back three.

The trail remains warm. The coming weeks will reveal whether this is once again a fleeting rumour or a genuine deal taking shape in this summer transfer window.
