Allegri’s future to be decided after the Cagliari match
Champions League qualification is not just a ticket to Europe’s premier club competition — for Massimiliano Allegri, it could also mean confirmation as AC Milan head coach for another season. The manager has a contractual option to extend his deal until 2028, activated upon qualifying for the Champions League, at a reported figure of around €6 million per season.
Allegri has already made his position clear at the press conference: the contract is not what matters most. What truly counts, in his own words, is the willingness of the ownership and the incoming directors to build a competitive squad, invest with real purpose and pursue an ambitious sporting project. If those assurances arrive, the Livorno-born coach is ready to stay and launch a fresh challenge with Milan. He is attached to the city, settled in the Rossoneri environment and believes in the project.
Napoli remain in the background
Meanwhile, Napoli have not stopped monitoring Allegri with interest. Multiple sources have reported contacts, dinners and concrete expressions of interest between the coach and the Neapolitan club’s environment. However, for the time being, that option has been placed on hold: Allegri has not opened the door to an early departure and is waiting to see what unfolds in Milan after the Cagliari fixture.
At Napoli, moreover, Allegri is just one of the names in the frame. The Azzurri’s list reportedly also includes Maurizio Sarri, who however appears to be leaning towards Atalanta, and above all Vincenzo Italiano, current head coach of Bologna and expected to leave the club at the end of the season. A managerial market that promises to be lively and full of twists.
The transfer market question: Allegri’s real condition
The real game, for Allegri, will be played in the weeks following the end of the league season. The manager has already drawn a clear line: if Milan wants to compete at the top, it must build a squad capable of doing so. This season, the Rossoneri found themselves going into the final day still needing to secure a Champions League spot — a situation that should never have arisen with only one competition to focus on.
For next season, then, the goal cannot simply be to hold onto a top-four finish: Milan must return to challenging for the Scudetto. And to do that, investment, competent leadership and a clear vision are non-negotiable — all elements that Allegri himself has identified as the necessary conditions for his continued presence at the club.
The hope — and the conviction of many supporters — is that the club is already working in that direction, as hinted at by recent boardroom movements. Milan deserves to be great again, and with Allegri at the helm and a strong club behind him, that goal is far from a dream.
