Theo Hernandez to AC Milan: why a return is (almost) impossible
Among the topics that continue to fascinate Rossoneri fans, one of the most debated in recent weeks concerns a potential reunion between Theo Hernandez and AC Milan. The French full-back, after years of outstanding performances in red and black — capped by the 2021-22 Scudetto — left the club with a public letter that sparked controversy, leaving a wound that has not entirely healed.
A painful farewell
The bond between Theo Hernandez and Milan was intense and emotionally charged. The French left-back wrote himself into the club’s history not only through his performances but also through his numbers: the most prolific defender in Rossoneri history, he surpassed even the legendary Paolo Maldini in the special ranking of goals scored by a full-back wearing the Milan shirt — earning congratulations from Maldini himself. A recognition worth its weight in gold.
However, the farewell was far from smooth. In his farewell letter, Theo thanked coaches, staff and teammates, but also hinted at tensions with the ownership and management. A message that did not go unnoticed and that has left an indelible mark on his relationship with the current club administration.
The Furlani factor
The crux of this matter has a very specific name: Giorgio Furlani. The current Milan CEO represents, as things stand, the main obstacle to any scenario involving the French full-back’s return to the Rossoneri. Relations between the parties deteriorated precisely during his tenure and, as long as Furlani is at the helm, the chances of seeing Theo back at Milanello remain slim, if not zero.
Life in Saudi Arabia
From a financial perspective, Theo Hernandez has found very favourable conditions in the Saudi Pro League, where he earns a top-level salary. The Saudi championship has attracted numerous European top players in recent years, offering wages that are well above continental football standards. Granted, a few cracks are beginning to appear in that landscape too — with some players considering a return to Europe for personal reasons or due to the geopolitical situation in the region — but at the moment there are no concrete signs of an opening towards a return to Italy.
Turning the page: the right philosophy
In football, as in life, some stories are best left to memory. Theo Hernandez at Milan was an extraordinary chapter: crucial goals, quality play, and a physical and technical presence that redefined the role of the left-back on the European stage. But when a cycle closes — and in this case it closed on terms that were far from ideal — it is healthy to look ahead.
The one exception that Rossoneri history offers us regarding returning players is that of Kaká, who returned to Milan in 2013 in a different guise compared to his first, exhilarating spell. A unique case, tied to an absolute world-class talent and a love affair with the city and the club that goes far beyond football itself.
For Theo, the Rossoneri chapter must be considered definitively closed. Milan looks ahead, building its future with new ideas and new protagonists.
