Loftus-Cheek stays silent: future up in the air
Ruben Loftus-Cheek has spoken publicly about his future at AC Milan — but his words have done little to clarify the situation. The English midfielder told reporters: “I can’t say much about my future at the moment,” adding that he is taking time to relax with his family and recharge after a difficult season. It was a deliberately non-committal answer, and one that speaks volumes about where things stand between the player and the club.
The fact that Loftus-Cheek did not take the opportunity to publicly reaffirm his desire to stay at Milan is, in itself, telling. When a player wants to remain at a club, they say so. Silence, in football, rarely means nothing.
A disappointing season: the numbers don’t lie
The 2024/25 campaign was, by any objective measure, well below expectations for the English midfielder. Signed from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 for approximately €14 million, Loftus-Cheek arrived at San Siro with the physical and technical attributes to become one of Serie A’s most influential midfielders. The reality, however, fell far short of those expectations. The former Chelsea man struggled to find any real consistency throughout the season, rarely making a decisive impact and never quite demonstrating the physical intensity and competitive edge that had been anticipated from a player of his pedigree.
In a midfield that requires quality, energy and leadership, his contribution was too often below the required standard, and the club’s management appears to be exploring new options for that area of the pitch.
Milan’s summer transfer window: an opportunity to reshape the midfield
Should Loftus-Cheek’s departure be confirmed, it would open up interesting possibilities in AC Milan’s transfer market activity. The club has already signalled its intention to strengthen the midfield, and names such as Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich have been linked — although all negotiations remain on hold due to the absence of an operational leadership structure at the club.
The hope among Rossoneri supporters is that, once the new management team and head coach are in place, Milan will be able to act decisively in the market and build a squad capable of challenging at the top of Serie A and making an impact in European competition. The midfield is a key area, and the club has the resources to find the right profile.
