The striker dilemma: Milan plan their future around Lewandowski and Nkunku
AC Milan’s summer transfer window is shaping up to be a busy one, and among the hottest items on the board’s agenda are the names of Robert Lewandowski and Christopher Nkunku. In the coming days, a face-to-face meeting is expected between Igli Tare and the two players’ entourage — who share the same agent — an appointment that could significantly shape Milan’s attacking strategy for next season.
Lewandowski: the big question mark
The name of Lewandowski sits at the heart of a genuine internal power struggle within the club. On one side, Tare and Allegri are believed to be in favour of bringing in the Polish striker: a profile of absolute international pedigree, capable of delivering goals and leadership, with a status that very few other available strikers on the market can match.
On the other side, however, stands the RedBird philosophy — the American fund that owns the club — which is traditionally opposed to investing in players aged 35 and over. Lewandowski is 38 years old and, on paper, falls outside the parameters that RedBird intends to apply systematically. Giorgio Furlani, the club’s CEO, is also said to have reservations about the deal.
It should be noted, however, that the fund has already made exceptions in the past when circumstances demanded a more pragmatic approach, and that the experience of a striker of the Polish international’s calibre could make a real difference in a European campaign. The meeting with the agent will be crucial in understanding the true intentions of all parties involved.
Nkunku: a talented player on the market
Alongside the Lewandowski discussion, the agenda for the upcoming meeting will also include a full review of the situation surrounding Christopher Nkunku. The French midfielder/forward, who arrived at Milan this season with high hopes, has not fully convinced, and the club is exploring possible solutions for next summer.
Milan’s aim will be to generate income from Nkunku’s sale, using the meeting with his agent to gauge interest and establish his current market value. The player undeniably has quality, and there would be no shortage of interest from other European clubs.
A summer of fundamental choices for the attack
Lewandowski or a younger profile? Sell Nkunku or give him another chance? These are questions AC Milan will need to answer clearly in the weeks ahead. The meeting with the players’ entourage is just the first step in what promises to be a decisive summer transfer window that could reshape the club’s entire attacking outlook.
What is certain is that the Rossoneri board is working on multiple fronts to build a competitive Milan for next season, whether in the Champions League or beyond. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining which direction the club takes.
