AC Milan target Mario Gila to strengthen their defence: expiring contract opens the door

One of the names generating the most buzz around the Rossoneri camp is Mario Gila, the Spanish centre-back currently playing for Lazio. According to reports, Milan’s management led by Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada have identified the 2000-born defender as the ideal profile to bolster their backline ahead of next season.

Contract expiring in 2027: a market opportunity

The strongest card in Milan’s hand is the Spaniard’s contractual situation. Gila’s deal with Lazio runs until 2027, meaning there is just one year left before it naturally expires. This is no small detail: players with only twelve months remaining on their contracts are rarely valued at premium prices, and this could work heavily in Milan’s favour during negotiations.

Adding further substance to this trail is the player’s own desire. According to sources, the former Real Madrid youth product has no intention of renewing with the Biancocelesti and is ready to explore new challenges. A stance that inevitably weakens Lazio’s bargaining position.

The Real Madrid factor: 50% sell-on clause

There is, however, one element that slightly complicates the financial picture. Real Madrid, the club that developed Gila in their academy before selling him to Lazio, hold a 50% sell-on clause on any future transfer fee. This means half of whatever Lazio receive would go straight to the Spanish giants.

For this very reason, the Roman club may demand a slightly higher asking price to offset the portion owed to Real Madrid. Nevertheless, the figures involved should not be prohibitive for the Milan hierarchy.

A defender who knows Serie A inside out

One of the qualities most valued by Milan’s technical staff is the fact that Gila knows Italian football intimately. The Spanish central defender has been playing in Serie A for several seasons now and has established himself as an undisputed starter in Lazio’s rearguard. It was Igli Tare, Lazio’s legendary former sporting director, who originally brought him to Rome from Real Madrid, recognising his talent and potential for growth.

This season, the defender has once again proven his reliability as one of the pillars of the Biancocelesti defence. Milan fans could get a close look at him as early as Sunday at the Olimpico, when the Rossoneri travel to face Lazio — a perfect scouting opportunity on the pitch.

How Milan’s defence would look

Should the Spaniard arrive, he would complete a defensive department currently featuring Fikayo Tomori, Strahinja Pavlović, Matteo Gabbia, and De Vrij. Adding Gila would provide extra depth and quality, giving manager Allegri a top-level alternative to manage the demanding schedule across Serie A, Coppa Italia, and European competition.

Initial contacts with the player’s representatives were already made back in January, although at the time Lazio — having already sold several players during the winter window — were unwilling to part with yet another key squad member. Now the landscape has shifted, and conditions to reopen talks appear far more favourable.

Milan’s strategy: invest in attack, find value in defence

The Rossoneri management’s approach seems clear: channel the bulk of their financial firepower into the attacking department while seeking smart, cost-effective opportunities to reinforce the defence. Gila would represent exactly that kind of deal — a quality player already settled in Italy, available at reasonable terms thanks to his approaching contract expiry.

Milan are determined to build an increasingly competitive squad, and the Spanish defender’s profile appears tailor-made for the club’s technical project. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether negotiations move into a decisive phase.
