Napoli-Milan: a painful defeat that doesn’t erase the growth path
The trip to the Maradona Stadium ended with a bitter result for AC Milan, who left the pitch after a match in which Massimiliano Allegri’s side produced far too little going forward. The disappointment among the Rossoneri faithful is understandable, but this moment calls for clear-headedness and a constructive spirit rather than knee-jerk reactions driven by frustration.
Few chances at the Maradona: Milan need to be braver
The performance against Napoli once again highlighted the limitations in Milan’s attacking output. Goal-scoring opportunities were scarce: a shot on the counter triggered by a long pass from Youssouf Fofana, a header from Strahinja Pavlović on a corner kick, and little else. Ninety-five minutes in which Milan struggled to threaten, a statistic that fuels criticism of the team’s tactical approach.
That said, losing away to a strong and competitive side like Napoli is no disgrace. Napoli remain one of the most solid teams in the league, and the match could easily have ended in a draw — a result more reflective of what was seen on the pitch.
Allegri under the spotlight: criticism is fair, but balance is key
After the defeat, the Livorno-born manager inevitably found himself in the crosshairs of a section of the fanbase. Many are calling for a change on the bench, demanding more attacking intent and greater initiative. The demand is legitimate: supporters who go to the stadium, pay for their tickets and want to see a team that dares to impose its own game cannot be ignored.
However, it is crucial not to lose sight of the bigger picture. This season, Milan have 15 more points than at the same stage last year, when the Rossoneri finished eighth in the table, out of all European competitions and having suffered several humiliating defeats. Allegri’s work, despite the clear shortcomings in the attacking phase, has restored solidity and competitiveness to a squad that was in disarray twelve months ago.
Seven matches to go: time to build, not tear down
With seven matchdays still to play, the season is far from over. Calling for a sacking or an end-of-season separation at this point risks being counterproductive. Continuity has value, and Allegri deserves the chance to complete his project, ideally backed by a targeted summer transfer window that gives him the tools to express a more ambitious style of football.
As Pavlović himself stressed after the final whistle, “we need to create more up front and when we do create, we have to finish”. Significant words, especially coming from a centre-back who has become one of the best players in the Rossoneri squad, not least thanks to his attacking forays. A sign of awareness that bodes well for the remainder of the campaign.
Constructive criticism is absolutely valid and should be accepted with intellectual honesty, but the way forward is through support and trust. Milan have the foundations to finish this season well and plan an even brighter future.
