Federico Mangiameli’s Explosive Social Media Post
A raw, unfiltered and deeply troubling testimony has been shared on social media by Federico Mangiameli, born in 2005, a former AC Milan youth player. The young footballer, who went on to play for Bologna and Torino before walking away from the game in the summer of 2023, has broken his silence to publicly reveal what he witnessed behind the scenes of Italian professional football.
Mangiameli’s Words: Corruption and Cronyism
His outburst came shortly after Italy’s elimination from World Cup qualification — almost as a bitter reminder of the deep-rooted causes behind Italian football’s crisis. These were the former Rossonero’s words:
“On one hand I’m gutted about the elimination, on the other I’m glad. Only those who’ve lived in that world can know the filth behind it. Agents bringing players from amateur leagues to Serie C thanks to an envelope with €50,000 inside. Primavera squads filled with foreign players paid absurd wages, coaches who couldn’t even decide who to field. I’ve seen disgraceful things — money, teammates treated appallingly by directors with no respect.”
Mangiameli didn’t stop there, branding the Italian football system as “toxic” and adding:
“Unlike other sports, football has become something you shouldn’t look up to. People diving all the time, nepotism, ignorant and rude people who would do anything for a few euros.”
A Disturbing Picture That Questions the Entire System
The accusations levelled by the young former player are extremely serious, touching on sensitive issues such as corruption among agents, pressure on youth coaches, and the treatment of academy players. Unfortunately, his account does not appear to be an isolated case, adding to a growing number of reports in recent years about the workings of Italian youth football.
The fact that Mangiameli took his first steps in the AC Milan youth academy — one of the most prestigious and well-structured in Italy — makes his testimony all the more striking. It should be noted that his words refer to his overall experience across Italian football, spanning multiple clubs and different environments.
The Need for Structural Change
This testimony comes at an already sensitive time for Italian football, with the FIGC undergoing a leadership transition and the national team struggling to rediscover its identity. Mangiameli’s words serve as a wake-up call that cannot be ignored: the future of the footballing movement depends on protecting young players and ensuring transparency throughout the system.
