Charles De Ketelaere Looks Back on His Milan Adventure
Charles De Ketelaere has once again spoken about his time at Milan. The Belgian forward, now a key player for Atalanta under Gian Piero Gasperini, made some revealing comments from the Belgian national team camp that have inevitably put the spotlight back on his brief but eventful spell in the Rossoneri shirt.
De Ketelaere’s Words: “No Regrets”
The 2001-born talent was straightforward: “I have no regrets about the move from Bruges to Milan. Perhaps during that period I should have shown more confidence in myself, but I’ve learned that in the meantime”. Words that speak to a journey of personal and professional growth, one that truly took shape after his departure from Milan.
The Belgian also spoke about the key role Gasperini has played in his development: “I think in a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 my qualities come out better”. An important acknowledgement of the coach who knew how to get the best out of his technical and tactical attributes.
The €30 Million Move and the San Siro Impact
In the summer of 2022, Milan invested over €30 million to bring De Ketelaere from Club Bruges to Milanello. It was a significant purchase that loaded enormous expectations onto the young talent. However, his introduction to the Rossoneri world proved far more challenging than anticipated.
Playing at San Siro in the Milan shirt carries a pressure that few stages in world football can match. For a young player arriving from a league with less media exposure like the Belgian top flight, the step up was immense. The tactical management of Stefano Pioli, who did not always find the right formula to bring out the Belgian’s best qualities, made the experience even tougher.
From Milan to Bergamo: A Rebirth
After one season in the Rossoneri colours and a subsequent loan to Atalanta, De Ketelaere finally found the ideal environment to express himself. In Bergamo, with less media scrutiny and a tactical system tailored to his strengths, the Belgian was reborn, becoming one of the most important players in the Orobici squad before completing a permanent transfer.
There is a fundamental difference between playing for Milan and playing for Atalanta: the weight of the shirt, the expectations of the fanbase, and the price tag create a cocktail that not everyone can handle straight away. De Ketelaere needed a different setting to flourish, and Gasperini deserves credit for believing in him.
A Hidden Regret?
De Ketelaere claims to have no regrets, but when you have the chance to wear the Rossoneri shirt and that adventure ends after just one year, it is hard not to carry a hint of bitterness. The opportunity to play for Milan is something few footballers in the world can boast, and the Belgian is certainly aware of that.
His story remains a reminder of how delicate it is to integrate young talents into a club with the ambitions and history of Milan. A closed chapter, but one that always leaves room for reflection.
