Luka Modrić has broken his silence. Through his personal social media channels, the Croatian midfielder — one of the greatest players in the history of football — sent a heartfelt message to AC Milan supporters, thanking them for the warmth and affection shown throughout the season. Words full of emotion that, however, leave open one fundamental question: is this a definitive farewell?
The Champion’s Message
In his post, Modrić described the season as a journey «full of beautiful and difficult moments», honestly acknowledging that the final outcome was not what anyone had hoped for. He then thanked «the Rossoneri fans wholeheartedly for the affection, the respect and the tremendous support shown throughout the year», closing with a «Forza Milan» that left supporters both moved and thoughtful. A greeting? A farewell? Or simply the closing of a difficult chapter? Each fan is left to draw their own conclusion.
A similar message had arrived just days earlier from Mike Maignan, the French goalkeeper who had equally bid farewell to the fans with a touching «Thank you all».
34 Appearances and a Season to Move On From
Modrić, despite being 40 years of age, made 34 appearances across the season, bringing his experience and crystalline class to the team whenever called upon. In the final stretch of the campaign, however, he was hampered by a cheekbone injury that limited his availability: he wore a protective mask and fought hard to be on the pitch, showing once again the champion’s spirit that defines him. But the team’s difficulties proved too great, and Milan ended the season in fifth place, missing out on Champions League qualification.
The Future: Real Madrid, Dinamo Zagreb or Milan Again?
The future of the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner is wide open. Ibrahimović is actively pushing for Modrić to remain at Milan for at least one more season: the bond between the two champions is strong, and Ibra understands better than anyone the human and technical value the Croatian brings. However, Modrić was left deeply disappointed by the way the season ended, and had placed considerable faith in continuing his work under Allegri — the two had built an excellent personal and professional relationship. With the Tuscan coach’s departure, those certainties have evaporated.
Real Madrid have let it be known that they would welcome a return of the player to the club — this time, however, in a managerial or directorial capacity. A homecoming that would hold enormous appeal for Modrić. The Dinamo Zagreb option also cannot be ruled out: the club of his hometown, led by the legendary Zvonimir Boban, has been courting the champion for years in the hope of bringing him back to Croatia.
The Decision Awaits the World Cup
It is unlikely that Modrić will make any definitive decision before the World Cup. What is certain is that he will want to understand what kind of technical project Milan can build in the coming weeks. If the Rossoneri manage to appoint a credible head coach and put together a competitive plan, the chances of him staying increase significantly. After all, Milan is a club where he has felt at home, welcomed with warmth and respect.
Whatever he decides, Luka Modrić has written a beautiful page in the Milan story. Watching him play at San Siro was a privilege for every Rossoneri supporter — one of those rare gifts that football occasionally bestows. Milan wishes him all the best, in the knowledge that — wherever his next chapter takes him — a champion of this calibre will always find a way to leave his mark.
