Maldini and Milan: a return is possible, but only under one condition

Ambrosini speaks clearly: ownership must change first
Shedding light on the situation is Massimo Ambrosini, former Rossoneri midfielder, long-time friend and confidant of Maldini. In a recent statement, Ambrosini chose his words with surgical precision: “There is only one condition for Paolo to return to Milan: the ownership must change.”
This is not a rumour, not an off-the-record tip. Ambrosini knows the former captain’s thinking from up close, is close to the Maldini family, and when he speaks he does so with full awareness. His words therefore carry significant weight and deserve to be taken seriously.
Principles above everything else
Paolo Maldini is a man of firm principles, built over decades of career both on and off the pitch. His exit from Milan’s management in 2023 — dismissed in barely ten minutes after years of work and dedication — left a deep mark. Returning to a structure led by the same owner who pushed him out in that manner would be incompatible with the values that have always defined him as a man, before even as an executive.
Maldini and Milan were one single thing for decades: first as an iconic player, then as a director. Yet what should have been an unbreakable bond was severed abruptly. Rebuilding it requires clear conditions, and those conditions do not currently exist.
Maldini the executive: a recognised growth
In the same statement, Ambrosini also drew a precise portrait of Maldini as a club leader. He highlighted how Paolo has developed over time an intellectual autonomy that has increased his credibility: “I don’t think a former player is automatically a good executive. But if you have the ability, the authority, the personality, the knowledge and a strong belonging to the club — which in Paolo’s case goes without saying — then you can transfer all of that into a leadership role.”
Moreover, the former captain has also worked on more personal aspects, improving his empathy in relationships with players — something that was not initially considered his strongest suit. Players, as is well known, measure not only the executive but also the person standing before them, and Maldini has shown growth on both fronts.
Milan’s future and the supporters’ hope
What is certain is that Maldini’s desire to return to Casa Milan is real and strong. But the timing and the conditions must be right. Rossoneri supporters can keep hoping: the club is in a phase of deep reflection on its management and ownership structure, and future scenarios remain open.
