Comotto returns to Milan: between renewal and possible loan to Modena

Cristian Comotto has returned to Milan after his loan spell at Spezia in Serie B and, according to the latest reports, he is keen to stay within the Rossoneri fold. The young midfielder — son of former Serie A defender Gianluca Comotto — showed he can handle the step up in class, and the club is now working with him on a contract extension, currently due to expire in 2028, which they would like to push through to 2031, along similar lines to what was already agreed with Francesco Camarda.

However, growing reports suggest that Modena are interested in taking the player on loan for the coming season. A move that would allow the young Rossonero to continue accumulating minutes at a high level, further developing in a competitive environment like Serie B before eventually making the final leap to Milan’s first team.

The interview: Tonali like a brother, Modrić an idol from day one

In a recent interview with Cronache di Spogliatoio, Comotto opened up with genuine candour, speaking about his role models, his dreams and his human journey — before the sporting one.

On Sandro Tonali, his words carried real emotional weight: “Sandro even came to my 18th birthday — he’s almost like a brother to me. He often watches my games and gives me advice, which is something incredible.” The two are bound not only by the same agency — GR Sport — but by a genuinely personal connection. Tonali, who experienced professional football at a very young age with Brescia, shared his own story with Comotto: “He told me about it when we were the same age and I was playing my first season at Brescia.” An invaluable lesson for a boy who finds himself growing up in dressing rooms full of players up to twenty years his senior.

Even more evocative were his words about the dream of one day sharing a pitch with the former Juventus and Newcastle star: “Imagine if one day we could play together, at club level or for the national team… that would be incredible.”

Modrić: the role model who made him fall in love with Real Madrid

The other great idol in Comotto’s life is Luka Modrić, the Croatian midfielder who — fittingly — is now his Milan teammate, with the Croatian’s stay at the club looking increasingly likely. For Comotto, the former Real Madrid star has been “a reference point forever”, to the point of making him a passionate follower of Real Madrid and, inevitably, Cristiano Ronaldo too.

The fact that Modrić now wears the Milan shirt is no small detail for the young midfielder: having in the dressing room one of the greatest champions in modern football history — a man who has won everything with Real Madrid and Croatia — is an extraordinary learning opportunity. And Comotto, son of a man who knows what it means to compete at the top, seems to have every quality needed to make the most of it.

The Spezia season: growth you can see

His Serie B campaign with Spezia marked an important milestone in the young Rossonero’s development. As he himself said in the interview: “It changed me as a person. The dressing room level was much higher, with more experienced players, while I was coming from the Primavera.” Facing the reality of professional football at that level — with its rhythms, pressures and higher technical quality — was a fundamental testing ground.

Comotto now stands at a crossroads: remain in Milan’s orbit through another targeted loan, or earn a direct role in Amorim’s project. Either way, the signal sent by the contract extension — from 2028 to 2031 — says everything about the club’s belief in him. Milan believes in Comotto, and Comotto believes in Milan.
