The chapter between Massimiliano Allegri and AC Milan is not yet formally closed. The former Rossoneri head coach has returned to Milan specifically to resolve the bureaucratic and legal issues surrounding the termination of his contract with the club. A necessary step before any new professional commitment can be made official — starting with his highly anticipated move to Napoli.
The Dismissal Timeline
Retracing the sequence of events: the official dismissal statement was released immediately after the defeat against Cagliari on the evening of Monday 26th May. However, the formal dismissal notice via PEC (certified electronic mail) only reached Allegri on Thursday 29th May, bearing the signature of Milan president Paolo Scaroni. A timeline that raised a few procedural questions, but which now requires the Tuscan coach to work through the details of his separation with his legal team.
Severance Pay: Milan and Allegri at an Impasse
On the financial side, the matter is a sensitive one. Allegri was dismissed, which in principle entitles him to contractual rights. However, Milan are reportedly unwilling to grant any severance pay: doing so would effectively mean indirectly contributing to part of the salary the coach is set to earn at his next club. According to reports, Allegri is expected to sign a two-year deal with Napoli, the club led by Aurelio De Laurentiis — an agreement that would see him take charge of the Neapolitan side for the next two seasons.
Negotiations between the two parties — Milan on one side, Allegri and his lawyers on the other — could take a few more days to conclude. Both sides, however, are reportedly keen to bring matters to a swift resolution, allowing Allegri to officially confirm his future and Milan to focus entirely on the transfer market and the search for a new head coach.
A Farewell That Marks the End of an Era
Allegri’s departure marks a significant turning point for AC Milan. As already reported, the coach had reached a preliminary agreement with Napoli even before the Cagliari match ended — a detail that speaks volumes about the complexity of the situation at the Rossoneri. Now both paths separate definitively, and Milan can look ahead with purpose and determination.
The season just ended was disappointing on many fronts, but every ending carries with it a new beginning. Milan have all the resources — financial, human and visionary — to build something truly significant once again. And the choice of the next head coach will be the first, most fundamental building block of that future.
