Mario Gila Arrives in Milan: The Rossoneri Adventure Begins

He has officially landed at Linate. Mario Gila, former Lazio defender, took his first steps as a new Rossoneri player, welcomed at Milan’s airport with great excitement. A familiar scene, reminiscent of just a few days ago when Ruben Amorim made his own triumphant arrival at the same airport as AC Milan’s new head coach. This time, it is the Spanish centre-back’s turn to begin a new chapter of his career under the Portuguese manager’s guidance.

Milan’s Second Signing of the Summer

With Gila’s arrival, AC Milan completes their second signing of the summer 2026 transfer window, following Gonzalo Ramos. A clear statement of intent from the club, determined to build a competitive squad around their new manager. The agreement with Lazio had been reached in the previous days, and today’s arrival in Italy provided the final confirmation.

Medical examinations are scheduled for tomorrow morning, after which Gila will head to the club’s headquarters to put pen to paper on his contract. He is expected to join the squad as early as Monday, for the first official pre-season session under Amorim at Milanello.

Fee and Contract: An Investment Worthy of the Club’s History

From a financial standpoint, the operation is far from modest. Milan have invested approximately €27.5 million, with additional performance-related bonuses on top. A figure that places the Spanish defender directly in the top five most expensive defenders in the club’s history, alongside illustrious names such as Leonardo Bonucci, Fikayo Tomori and, in past decades, Alessandro Nesta.

On the personal contract front, the two parties have agreed on a five-year deal, with a base salary of €4.5 million per season, plus bonuses that could bring the total up to €5.5 million. Wages befitting a key player, justified by his international profile and the strategic role he will play in Amorim’s defensive setup.

An additional financial benefit for the Rossoneri comes from the applicability of the Italian Growth Decree (Decreto Crescita): thanks to this tax incentive, the effective cost to Milan’s balance sheet will be noticeably lower than the nominal figure, making the operation even more sustainable.

Milan Beats Napoli and Atalanta to the Punch

To bring Gila to Milan, the Rossoneri had to fend off competition from Napoli and Atalanta, two clubs that had moved for the Lazio defender before them. Napoli encountered internal difficulties, while Atalanta never managed to finalise an agreement with the player. Milan, having already initiated contact at an earlier stage, re-entered negotiations decisively and wrapped up the deal within days — a clear sign of the determination behind the new project led by Zlatan Ibrahimović and Gerry Cardinale.

Mario Gila brings international experience, sharp reading of the game and impressive physicality — exactly the profile Amorim is looking for in his defensive system. An acquisition that fills the Rossoneri fanbase with genuine excitement, already eager to see him in action at Milanello.
