The Ralf Rangnick file has taken on a new chapter. The president of the Austrian Football Federation has spoken publicly about the future of his national team head coach, clarifying the federation’s position and shedding further light on a story that connects AC Milan’s fortunes with those of the Austrian national side.
The Austrian Federation: “The decision is his to make”
The words of the Austrian football chief were clear and direct:
“We have had many discussions with Rangnick and we want to keep him until the Euros. He knows our resources — it is now up to him to make a decision.”
The federation has therefore placed a contract renewal on the table with the aim of keeping Rangnick in charge at least until Euro 2028, retaining the German coach who has led the national side convincingly in recent seasons. The message is clear: the will to keep him is there, but the ball is in his court.
Talks with Milan and the answer expected soon
At the same time, as is well known, Rangnick has already held talks with AC Milan. The Rossoneri had explored the possibility of offering him a high-level executive role — something along the lines of a football director or technical director — which would have sat alongside the incoming head coach.
According to available information, Rangnick’s definitive answer could come as early as the first days of next week. A response that will inevitably shape the Austrian federation’s own plans and could significantly alter the technical and managerial landscape at Milan.
Glasner without Rangnick: a scenario already on the table
One important detail to highlight is that, according to information circulating in Rossoneri circles, the potential arrival of Oliver Glasner as AC Milan’s head coach is already being considered viable even without Rangnick in an executive role. This marks a shift from early hypotheses, when the two names seemed almost inseparable in the structure of the club’s sporting project.
Glasner, it should be noted, is an internationally recognised coach with a clear and identifiable working methodology and solid experience in high-pressure environments. His ability to get the best out of available resources and to build a defined playing identity could prove invaluable during what will inevitably be a rebuilding phase at Milan next season.
A knot that needs untangling — and fast
The current situation is therefore one of a multi-layered knot that needs resolving simultaneously: the Austrian federation is waiting, Milan is waiting, and Rangnick finds himself at the centre of a far from straightforward choice — between the continuity of a national project he believes in and the challenge — as exciting as it is demanding — of joining a great club in full reconstruction mode.
What is certain is that the coming days will be decisive. AC Milan needs clear and timely answers to finally begin building its future. The confidence in the club’s potential and in the ownership’s commitment to making the right choices remains the guiding compass for every Rossoneri supporter.
